What is Asterisk PBX?
Asterisk is an open source software for telephone exchange - PBX - private branch exchange. Like any telephone exchange, Asterisk enables a certain number of phone lines to connect to each other and at the same time establish connection with other phone services, including the well known conventional telepony PSTN - Public Switched Telephone System and VoIP - Voice over IP).
Asterisk features lots of possibilities and characteristics, which untill recently were peculiar only for expensive hardware telephone exchanges - voice mail, conference calls, interactive, IVR, call forwarding. Due to the fact that Asterisk is free software, the system gives the possibility new functionalities to be added, reconfigure scripts, dial plans and specific modules particularly for the needs of the client.
Asterisk supports large list of VoIP protocols including SIP and H.323. Asterisk may be a middleware for most of SIP phones, serving as registrar and as gateway between IP phones and public networks. Its embedded protocol IAX enables the efficient packaging of calls between Asterisk phone exchanges.
